While we cannot solve the huge economic challenges of a developing country such as Ghana, we do feel that by focusing our efforts on supporting nutrition, income generation, education, and farming in the Nabdam district of northern Ghana, we are able to significantly increase opportunities and ease poverty for a large number of Ghanaians.
Here are some costs as you think of a donation amount:
Food for an elementary student lunch averages 10 cents per meal, food for an entire school, 3 days/week, for 20 weeks is $2,500-$3,000. In 2018 we contributed $15,000 toward the amazing total cost of $50,000 for construction of a new, six classroom elementary school in Piitanga. Tuition/room/board for a college student is a mere $1,000/year. A locally built dual school desk (for two elementary students) is $31. A sturdy foot powered irrigation pump for a farmer that can cover 2 acres is $130. In January 2019, YWF paid $516 to repair the pump mechanism for a borehole in Zeemboug, restoring access to clean water for 150 families; typhoid infection due to unclean water was prevalent in the community. For us, one of the incentives for working in Ghana is the low cost of helping a large number of people with life-changing assistance.
Volunteers pay all of their own expenses, including travel to Ghana. Donations are solely used for projects in Ghana.
